Chapter III

A Blanket Around The Globe

At one time we burned a little wood to keep warm. Mills and factories
were powered by water flowing downstream.

The invention of the steam engine was a revoluton. Rivers and streams
were no longer needed and carbon dioxide flooded the atmosphere. The atmosphere remained but it did receive a continuous flow of CO2 and the temperature maps of the earth showed much warming. The earth acquired a blanket of warming air and climate change had begun.

The concept of the atmosphere as a blanket surrounding the earth.
Left, two hundred years ago with a normal amount of carbon dioxide. Right the pink suggests
the carbon dioxide added as a result of the industrial revoution.

In the left image the concentration of CO2 is about 270 ppm. On the right it is todays value of about 410 ppm although it is not visible. The light from the sun warms the earth and the CO2 prevents a portion of it from radiating back into space, the warming the earth. It is interesting that with no CO2 the earth would be too cold to support life. With too much CO2 as we currently have the hotter atmosphere will disrupt the weather (which happens in and under the blanket) eventually to the point of making a large part of the earth uninhabitable. However, we continue to add CO2 making the climate more hostile every day.
