IT'S JUST ANOTHER FORM OF WHITE COLLAR CRIME I say to myself, and in a certain sense that is true when oil company executives acknowledge a thorough understanding decades ago of the risks of climate change and rationalize their way out of doing something about it.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I am to talk to you about energy in the future. I will start by telling you why I believe that the energy resources of the past must be supplemented. First of all, these energy resources will run short as we use more and more of the fossil fuels. [....] But I would [...] like to mention another reason why we probably have to look for additional fuel supplies. And this, strangely, is the question of contaminating the atmosphere. [....] Whenever you burn conventional fuel, you create carbon dioxide. [....] The carbon dioxide is invisible, it is transparent, you can’t smell it, it is not dangerous to health, so why should one worry about it?
Carbon dioxide has a strange property. It transmits visible light but it absorbs the infrared radiation which is emitted from the earth. Its presence in the atmosphere causes a greenhouse effect [....] It has been calculated that a temperature rise corresponding to a 10 per cent increase in carbon dioxide will be sufficient to melt the icecap and submerge New York. All the coastal cities would be covered, and since a considerable percentage of the human race lives in coastal regions, I think that this chemical contamination is more serious than most people tend to believe.
HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT a quote from the CEO of EXXON, or BP or any other oil company. The speaker is world reknowned physist Edward Teller speaking and explaining the math behind global warming some 29 years before James Hansen appeared before Congress.
From The Union of Concerned Scientists "Major fossil fuel companies have known for decades that their products—oil, natural gas, and coal—cause global warming. Their own scientists told them so more than 30 years ago.
In response, they decided to deceive shareholders, politicians, and the public—you!—about the facts and risks of global warming.
They repeatedly fought efforts to move the country away from fossil fuels. They slowed progress on the most important challenge of our time. And some continue to spread disinformation and obstruct climate policies even today. All while being aware of the role their products play in climate impacts.
These companies should immediately stop funding climate deception. They should bear their fair share of responsibility for the damage caused by their products."
THESE EXAMPLES are among countless others were businesses or individuals have effectively conspired against America or against the entire world. And it is certainly not over. Recently the Koch brothers were found to have launched a major program against public transportion because of their large investments in automobile companies.
We refer to ourselves as an advanced society with no thought to how many earlier versions of our civilization may have throught that and how many more in the future may think the same.
One can point to multitudes of individuals that scam the world in one way or another, and we find have we been risking the future of the planet for sharholder equity. It makes one wonder if we are civilized at all.
A FORK IN THE ROAD. The original topic of this website was indeed just this conondrum and was inanothersshoes.com. You will find it in all the address lines. However, as I was working on it, the issue of climate change seemed to be taking on more urgency and so I switched topics without switching the domain name. Now it is a little too late, since switching back would require manually changing every link on the site. So I have taken the domain original intended for claimate change theearthistoast.com and simply forwarded it to inanothersshoes.com. Either will work. However, should I be able I will see if there are any slivers of wisdom I could apply to the most basic human problems of humanity.
